Knots & Grey Plover
In 2007 I was the Overall winner in the International Wild Bird Photographer of the year competition with my picture of a Grey Plover and Roosting Knot. This prestigious competition attracts over 7,000 entrants from 36 different countries from around the world. The image was chosen as the winner in the Birds in Britain category as well. The image was taken at Snettisham during October when the wintering Knot is at their peak. The light levels were low so I used slow shutter speeds to record the movement in the restless flock. The Grey Plover which was bolt still acted as the perfect ploy to show this movement.
Water Vole in a Water Pipe
Also in 2007 I won the Urban and Garden Wildlife category in the Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition with this intimate portrait of a Water Vole. This competition is the biggest of its kind in the world and in 2007 attracted a record 32,500 entrants from around the world. The image was taken at a local canal near to my home and is the result of two years of work. This endearing Mammal is the fastest declining species in the UK.
Red Deer Stag During The Rut
In 2005 I was also highly commended in the Animal Portrait category with this image of a Red Deer Stag during the Rut. This image was taken at Bradgate Park which is close to my home and I have spent many years photographing the Red Deer here.

All these images were taken in this country which proves that you don't have to travel and find exotic species to win competitions, there is a wealth of subjects right on your doorstep.
