Little Auks GDT

Bird Category Highly Commended GDT European Nature Photographer of the Year 2011

I took this image in Svalbard last summer and this is the second time I have visited this pristine wilderness. My form of transport in Svalbard is a yacht as this gives us complete flexibility in getting around and when we find a subject we can then spend much longer with them. We came across a wonderful Iceberg that had a large number of Fulmars and Kittiwakes feeding at the base. We had spent over two hours photographing at which point we decided to head of to our next location. As we moved off a small flock of Little Auks which had been feeding out at sea flew between the yacht and the Iceberg. I managed to grab a couple of frames just as they flew past the Iceberg. Svalbard is one of the greatest places I have visited over the years and I have already arranged a trip next summer to go back, I can't wait and I am already counting down the days.
