Red Deer Roar
Mammal Behaviour Highly Honoured, Natures Best 2009
I am very fortunate to live close to Bradgate Park in Leicestershire and every autumn for the past twenty years I have been photographing the Red Deer during the annual rut. At this time of the year the dominant stags are very busy keeping their harem of females together and with rival males waiting in the wings for a slight chance to muscle in on the action it can all be very intense. On this occasion I had spotted two large stags fighting amongst the bracken on a distant hillside but by the time I had got there the stags had parted and the victor was strutting his stuff, roaring and showing his dominance.
