Vole in a Hole
Urban and Garden Wildlife Category Winner, Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2007.
I always had a burning ambition to photograph Water Voles and when the chance arose I took it with both hands. A disused canal near my home supported a small population and I went so many times during this period. This image was one I really wanted to get, if heavy rain was predicted the authorities would open the sluice gates to lower the water table as the canal was prone to flooding. If the rain was not heavy the level of the water would stay low exposing the old drainage pipes and that's when I got the chance to photograph a vole sitting in the entrance.
