Image of the Month

Polar Bear

I spent four weeks during July and August travelling around Svalbard in a Yacht photographing the abundant wildlife that etches out a living in this high Arctic archipelago. Svalbard is one of the most beautiful locations on this planet and I feel very fortunate to have now visited twice. This trip was so much more rewarding for me from a photography point of view as we really had some wonderful encounters. During our trip we saw over 30 Polar Bears which was an amazing number in such a short space of time. Although I have many images of Bears on Ice (my main Target) this image really sums up the struggle this beautiful creature has to endure during the summer months. This large male was marooned on this small island, the ice long gone and his food source was in short supply. These Walrus must have been very tempting but he couldn't risk injury by tackling such a large creature, so kept his distance.
