Long Tailed Duck

March 2012

During the early part of March I visited the Varanger Peninsular, Norway. The big fjords and harbours of Varanger are excellent during the winter months for many species of Arctic Sea Duck. King, Stellers and Common Eider can be found in huge numbers, so can the beautiful Long-tailed Duck. My main target was King Eider but I really enjoyed getting images of Long-tails as they are so graceful. During March the ducks are busy with courtship and this is by far the best time to photograph them. This Male was following a female and they both moved into a patch of water that was reflecting the red buildings of the harbour.
